Introducing Craobh Gin: A Fresh Scottish Sensation Rooted in Friendship and Family
Craobh Gin (pronounced “Kroov”), a brand-new addition to the vibrant world of Scottish spirits, is set to shake up the gin industry as it prepares to launch on November 3rd, 2023. Crafted with a healthy serving of passion topped with a dash of Scottish familial charm, Craobh Gin promises to be a unique experience for gin enthusiasts.
This is the perfect serve for anyone looking to raise a glass to togetherness with good friends and family.
How was the idea for Craobh Gin formed?
The idea for Craobh Gin sprouted from an animated discussion among friends and family at a gathering (where a wide variety of gins were consumed!). It was clear that many in the group had strong opinions on which gin was the best, which gin brands had the coolest aesthetic and, of course, the perfect mixer.
Michael Melvin, an award-winning graphic designer, mentioned that he had always toyed with the idea of creating his own gin, but had never quite got the project off the ground. Thankfully, Michael, the creative visionary, was in the presence of an astute and motivated business owner – his nephew Liam Anstruther.
Inspired by Michael’s musings, Liam, owner of a mortgage brokerage, phoned Michael a few days later (once their headaches had subsided) and asked him if he was ready to turn his vision into a reality. Michael jumped at the chance.
For our founders, chosen family is as important as family, so Michael knew he had to bring along lifelong friend and MD of a large engineering firm, Paul Boyden, who has developed the business strategy.
So, a graphic designer, a mortgage advisor and an MD walk into a bar, presenting a beverage to outdo every other gin resting on the shelves behind the unsuspected publican – Craobh Gin’s story has begun!
What makes Craobh Gin different?
The team at Craobh Gin are committed to crafting flavour that is driven by a fervent love for the spirit, a desire to break away from tradition and a goal to make drinking gin exciting again. Using a carefully curated selection of 12 botanicals, including the intriguing Sea Buckthorn, Craobh Gin strikes a harmonious balance with a subtle citrus twist. They will also be doing a little bit of good and giving back to the environment, pledging a portion of their profits towards sustainability projects, such as tree re-planting.
Craobh Gin is a superbly smooth small-batch Scottish gin, meticulously distilled and bottled in the heart of Scotland. Originally produced beneath the iconic arches of Glasgow’s renowned Central Station, we expanded production in 2025 to a new state-of-the-art distillery in Aboyne, nestled in the stunning Cairngorms. This move allows us to embrace more sustainable distilling methods while using some of the purest water in the world, perfect for creating an even smoother gin
Craobh, Scots Gaelic for ‘tree,’ symbolises the family tree that is at the heart of this venture, connecting friends and relatives through their shared love for gin. The brand’s unique abstract ‘family tree’ logo and bottle design will be revealed on their website very soon! But with a graphic designer at the helm, you know it’s going to look amazing.
Michael Melvin reflects on the origin of the brand, saying, “The main appeal was being able to all work together on a fun, exciting new project, creating gin for our family and friends to enjoy. We want it to be the kind of gin you bring to family gatherings and parties, one to be enjoyed slowly and purposefully while you laugh, dance and put the world to rights until the wee hours.”
